Glossary of Terms

Tyre Size: Width

The tyre size is the first three numbers on the tyre wall, the first number eg 195, refer to the section width of the tyre. This is the measurement, in millimetres, from the tyre’s inner sidewall to its outer sidewall.

Tyre Size: Profile

The second number is the tyre profile and is expressed as a percentage of the tyre's width. Eg. A tyre with 195/65/R15 has a profile or sidewall that is 65% of the 195mm (width).

Tyre Size: Rim Size

The third number is the Rim Diameter of the wheel on which the tyre is designed to fit. In our example this is 15 inches.

Tyre Load & Speed Rating

The Tyre Load & Speed Rating is the next number after the tyre size information E.G. 195/65R15 91V - The load index (91) is the tire size's assigned numerical value used to compare relative load carrying capabilities. In our example, the 91 identifies the tire's ability to carry approximately 1,356 pounds and speed rating (V) has the ability to run 240 km/h.

Tyre Pattern

Tyres are designed with different types of tread patterns and each one is meant for different road conditions and driving styles. The four types of tyre tread are directional, symmetrical, asymmetrical and directional/asymmetrical.

You can learn more about the different tread patterns in our Tyre Selection Guide

Wet Condition

This denotes the tyres ability to rapidly disperse water on very wet roads, significantly reducing the risk of aquaplaning.

Wet grip is rated from A to F:
A = highest rating
F = lowest rating

Ratings D and G are not used for passenger cars.

Petrol Consumption

This informs you of how a tyre performs on fuel consumption. Fuel-efficiency is graded from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient).

E.g A tyre would save up to 80 litres of fuel over the life of the tyres for a car fitted with four A-rated tyres driving at 50mph – it uses 7.5%1 less fuel than with G-rated tyres.

Tyre Noise

The tyre's exterior noise grading is expressed in decibels, accompanied by one, two or three sound waves. One black wave indicates the best noise level performance.

Tyre Pressure

The tyre pressure is normally found on the wall of the tyre of the tyres, but if it is not visible use the general rule of 30-32psi in the rear and 32-34psi in the front tyres.

Warranty Information
